In Latin, octo means eight. October, the eighth month of the year is recognized traditionally throughout the world as the gateway to winter. In the U.S., we celebrate National Pizza Month and, of course, Halloween. In early October, the Wall Street Journal reported that CFTC enforcement actions and fines are up in 2018, while SEC-related numbers decreased over the same period. After falling slightly in 2017, CFTC numbers have risen this year in part to issues surrounding cryptocurrency offerings and spoofing. Complaints also include various recordkeeping and position limit violations. NFA has called for nominations to its board of directors and nominating committees. Current terms of several directors expire February 21, 2019. Submissions for candidates for all positions must reach the NFA no later than October 15th. NIBA will be publishing the results of those nominations in subsequent newsletters. Elections will be held shortly after the nominations are announced, so be sure you have designated an Executive Representative to cast a vote for your registered firm. Only the Executive Representative will have the authority to vote on behalf of the firm. FIA Expo will be held in Chicago October 16-18. The annual conference showcases the financial industry’s latest technology, as well as providing education and business-building sessions. FIA Expo is the largest conference sponsored by the association during the year, and provides a great opportunity for networking. Several of our member FCMs will be holding symposiums and product presentations alongside the Expo -- check with your FCM. Pizza and a Snickers...great fuel for a busy October! Best, Melinda melinda@futuresrep.com

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
