Resources, Resources, Resources by Tom Sandy & Ryan Griffeth

Resources are part of NIBA’s mission to provide the information and education you need to grow your business. At a meeting of our Advisory Group (AG), several members wondered if we were doing enough to collect and offer industry resources to the membership. As a result of the AG’s suggestions, we have undertaken an initiative to increase resources available to you.

NIBA has begun an informal series of meetings with industry participants to discuss which materials will be most helpful to brokers and clients who want to understand and use products and services more effectively. These industry participants include exchanges such as the CME Group, NADEX and ICE; and, service providers, including lawyers, accountants, marketing consultants and compliance trainers.

Resources we hope to share include video presentations, online and in-person education and other educational/informational materials and programs. The subjects include market-specific topics, and issue specific topics, as well as general new or updated issues market, product and compliance oriented.

We will begin what we hope will be a very helpful series of resource articles and presentations within the next month or two. What topics would you like discussed? Do you have a specific exchange or firm from which you would like more information? Would you watch video presentations?

Please send your suggestions to NIBA Board Members Tom Sandy, ts@ricedairy.com or Ryan Griffeth, ryan.griffeth@postrockbrokerage.com by May 30. When you’re juggling five conversations at once while executing transactions in multiple markets, rely on the NIBA for resources to keep your business growing!

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
