Thank you to DePaul University for another hugely successful joint symposium. This marks the 5th year NIBA has partnered with DePaul University to present an afternoon of education and networking for our members -- and another standing-room-only event. This year’s topics included blockchain, NFA-audit triggers, new AML requirements, implementation of GDPR and changes to cyber-security regulations. The highlight of the meeting was an intimate and very informative armchair chat featuring Leo Melamed, pioneer of financial futures and Chairman Emeritus of CME Group. Big thanks also to the Joint NIBA/DePaul Symposium Committee. The 2018 event committee included: - Tom Sandy, Chairman (NIBA Event Chair; Rice Dairy, LLC) - Dr. Carl Luft, Academic Dir. Arditti Center, Assoc. Professor, DePaul University - Katie Tervin, Zaner Group - John Roe, BTR Trading - Mark Shore, Shore Capital Management/Coquest - Mike Loftus, Metolius Capital - Tom Edwalds, Exec. Dir. Arditti Center, DePaul - Steve Petillo, Straits Financial The video of the business sessions from the August 8th Symposium will be available soon on the NIBA website. To volunteer to help out with NIBA’s fall conference scheduled for September 13 at the CME Group Building, Chicago, contact Ryan Griffeth, NIBA Event Chairman.

From the Classroom to the Trading Floor

There is no single, clearly defined education path for entering the derivatives industry as professionals come from a range of academic backgrounds. Still, higher education plays a crucial role in preparing students for success in this complex and fast-evolving field. A strong foundation in finance, economics, and mathematics is essential. At the undergraduate level, students should prioritize courses in financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, corporate finance, and introductory derivatives. Just as important are courses in statistics and calculus, which help build the analytical and quantitative skills required for understanding pricing models, volatility, and risk management strategies. With the increasing reliance on algorithmic trading and quantitative research, a concentration or minor in applied mathematics, data science, or computer programming can...
