By whom, and how was the firm started?

DTN was founded in 1984, and became part of Telvent in 2008. Telvent DTN became part of Schneider Electric in 2011.

Does the firm provide services in addition to the primary business?

Telvent DTN delivers news and information through Internet, satellite, and data feed connections. The company provides analysis and integration tools that allow users to make more profitable business decisions. It serves the agriculture, refined fuels, commodities and futures trading, public safety, aviation, turf, recreation, construction, and transportation industries.

How has the futures and options industry evolved since the firm began?

The biggest changes, of course, are the huge increase in financial firms and hedge funds trading commodities, significantly greater volatility, and the advent of electronic trading.

What are the biggest challenges your customers face today, and what do you do to help them?

The biggest challenge for our core agricultural customers is effectively managing price risk in an increasingly volatile and complex market place. Telvent DTN provides a number of tools to help with the risk management process, including DTN ProphetX. In addition, it provides similar tools and information to its producer customers, including DTN Grains® Pro Online, and DTN Portal®, a tool to facilitate cash grain transactions online.

What do you think are the keys to the firm’s success?

Telvent DTN offers a unique value proposition that lies within its ties to the agricultural community. A vast market share with large producers and agribusiness enterprises provides the ability to not only supply vital information to customers, but also to help them connect with one another as it facilitates customer business processes and integrates work flows.

What trends are the firm most excited about?

Telvent DTN is excited about several trends in the commodities space, including globalization and supply chain optimization, and is presently expanding its international presence to meet the needs of traders and other agricultural professionals worldwide. The company currently provides services in more than 30 countries on six continents. In addition, Telvent DTN is a leader in the optimization of the agricultural supply chain with ag-centric, hosted marketing and communication tools, as well as an online grain portal.

What trends are the firm most worried about?

Nothing in particular — Telvent DTN looks at changing market trends as an opportunity. The company is here to help solve customers’ problems. New trends and other changes in the market provide new opportunities to help solve these issues.

Why are you a NIBA supporter?

Telvent DTN believes that in order to fully understand the challenges its customers face, it is important to support and be a member of industry organizations that are important to them. This helps it to stay on the forefront of changes and trends in the industry, and therefore be prepared to meet them with new products and services that benefit its customers. The NIBA is a respected industry organization and many of our customers belong. It is always good to see them in person at the NIBA conferences.
